Natural Asthma Remedy

Asthma is a severe, chronic lung disease.  In conventional medicine, asthma has been treated with steroids but these can have severe side effects.  Because of this, many people are searching for a natural asthma remedy in an effort to find cures for asthma.

A person suffering from asthma may have multiple symptoms, such as wheezing, the inability to stop coughing, and shortness of breath.  With all of these symptoms, it is important to develop an asthma management plan.

First, you have to know what causes asthma.  There are many risk factors for developing asthma. Having dust mite allergy symptoms is the number one risk factor.  And, in fact, over 25% of people with allergies develop asthma.  Other risk factors include environmental pollution, obesity, stress, having a parent who has asthma, and exposure to tobacco smoke.

To find an alternative medicine for asthma, patients should first look to a traditional asthma home remedy like vitamin therapy.  Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and zinc have been used for many years for asthma natural treatment.

In an asthma attack, the muscles around the bronchial tubes through which a patient breathes constrict, blocking airflow. Since asthma results from an inflammation causing a constriction of the bronchial tubes, the tubes to the lungs that allow oxygen to flow, it is important that patients suffering from asthma also learn to control their inflammation.

An anti-inflammatory diet can be very beneficial.  In this type of diet, patients should avoid foods that cause inflammation, such as red meat, potatoes, bread, white rice, crackers, and alcohol, especially red wine.  Drinking enough water every day is also very important.  People who suffer from asthma (or who are allergic to dust mites) have a higher risk for dehydration.  And therefore, they should make it a point to consume plenty of fluids.  At least ten large glasses of water per day is the minimum for helping decrease inflammation in the body.

Another way to decrease inflammation to protect against asthma symptoms is to take probiotics daily.  Probiotics can be found in foods such as yogurt and kefir or can be taken in a daily supplement form.  Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that are normally found in a healthy gut and studies have shown that they help to reduce inflammation, which in turn reduces asthma and allergy symptoms.  Probiotics have even been shown to have a possible beneficial effect in preventing asthma from occurring in the first place.

In the search for a natural asthma remedy, there are many components to be considered.  From vitamins, an anti-inflammatory diet, and extra water, to probiotics, a patient must be conscious of what they put in their body and how it will affect their asthma, either positively or negatively.
