Symptoms such as a rash, seasonal nasal congestion, acute red, watery eyes or asthma, the doctor may suspect is triggered by an allergy. To help identify particular allergens, your doctor may recommend a blood test for allergies.
Developing an allergy, your body’s immune system identifies a substance called an allergen that is normally harmless as an invader and produces a specific immunoglobin E (IgE) to fight against it. On the next encounter of the allergen, the IgE recognizes it and an allergic reaction is launched.
A release of the chemical histamine is triggered which causes the allergy symptoms including hives, sneezing, itchy eyes, running nose and wheezing. Common inhaled allergens include pollens, dustmite, moulds and animal dander.
Blood tests are mainly used for people already displaying symptoms of allergies, food in particular. They are not the main way for testing dust mites allergy.
The RAST Allergy test, performed on a blood sample, is used to screen for an allergy to specific substances triggering signs and symptoms of allergies including hives, eczema and asthma. It is used to detect the presence of IgE antibodies in the blood. The test is graded on a scale of 0 to 6, with 6 being the highest level of antibodies, therefore producing the strongest allergic reaction.
As it is performed on a blood sample, it has no effect on the person being tested. Even if the IgE test is returned negative, there is still a chance that the person has allergies.
Another blood test is the ELISA test. An unknown amount of antigen is affixed to a surface, and then a specific antibody is applied over the surface so that it can bind to the antigen. A drawback of the ELISA test is that it can often give a false result, so it must be conducted at least twice to confirm results.
Your allergist may order a blood test in addition to a skin test to confirm the diagnosis of allergy. The blood tests are generally less sensitive than skin testing. Like skin testing, many allergens can be tested from one blood sample. This test is particularly useful if you have eczema as the skin patch test can be uncomfortable. A disadvantage is that it doesn’t look at individual allergens. It can only be used to determine if you are suffering allergic reactions in general.
