Dust Mite Allergy Symptoms

Australian and International research has shown that up to 85% of people with asthma have an allergy to the house dust mite. Dust mite allergy symptoms may be experienced individually or all of the signs and symptoms unseasonally, all year round.

How do you really know if you have a problem?

Upon waking, you may experience continuous sneezing, persistently runny nose, stuffy nose and ears. Whilst in bed at night, you find you can’t stop coughing, postnasal drip, itchy eyes, ears and throat, watery eyes, conjunctivitis, reddened eyes, swollen eyes, crusting on your eyelids,

More symptoms include “allergic shiners” – dark circles under the eyes and, or the “allergic salute” – habitual upward rubbing of your nose with the index finger due to constant irritation.

By disturbing dust and making it airborne, you may experience wheezing or a tightening of the chest, itchy throat. Symptoms worsen when making beds but they may improve after leaving the house.

When an allergen is breathed in, there is an inflammatory reaction due to the release of different mediators from the cells in the lung. Researchers know now that the dust mite causes growth in muscle cells. A study conducted by the Respiratory Research Group and Department of Pharmacology at Sydney University found that house dustmite do more than cause an allergic, inflammatory reaction in asthmatics. In the airways, dust mites also cause the muscle cells to duplicate and grow in large numbers.

The allergen stimulate the overgrowth of smooth muscle cells in the airway, contributing to the airway narrowing and constricting, reducing breathing air flow and causing wheezing, a characteristic of asthmatics. When the airway wall is thicker there’s less space for air and there is more muscle to contract during spams. This increase in the number of smooth muscle cells in the airway wall can result in permanent damage to the human airways.
