How to Keep Your Pet Cats Even If You are Allergic to Them

Are you allergic to cats? Sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and wheezing – these are the common symptoms of an allergy attack. If you are experiencing any of these, you need to quickly observe if you have eaten anything that could have triggered it or have been exposed to something. Unfortunately, to some, the cause of their allergies could be their beloved cats. This can pose a huge problem, especially if you are a cat-lover who will not like the idea of giving up your cat just to feel better. The good news is, there are ways to work around the situation so that you can keep your pet and still manage your condition. Before that, however, you need to understand your allergy first.

The common belief is that this allergy is caused by being exposed to cat hair. The truth is, the reaction is actually caused by dander and saliva. Dander is the old skin cells that your pet constantly sheds. Cats are known to groom themselves all the time, so their saliva and dander can be anywhere in your home, thus making you very susceptible to allergy attacks. To solve this, here are a few things that you need to do:

Consult a Doctor

Make sure that the cause of your allergy is properly identified by consulting with a physician. While at it, it would be wise to have yourself tested to other allergens that your body is susceptible to, so that your treatment plan and management can be designed to address all these triggers. For all you know, you may also be allergic to your dogs or certain foods.

Constantly Have Your Cat Groomed

Obviously, do not do the grooming yourself. Ask anyone else from your home to do it for you so that you can prevent exposure from your cat’s dander. You may also opt to bring your cat to professional groomers. Most pet stores offer this kind of service.

Make Changes in Your Cat’s Living Habits

You should prohibit your cat from entering your room from now on. Your doctor may suggest that you keep your cat outdoors, but pet lovers would likely not be open to this idea. Hence, you can instead limit the area where your cat can roam. Provide a bed for your cat so that he or she will be inclined to stay there most of the day. You should regularly vacuum your furniture too and cover with washable cloths so that you can minimise the amount of allergens in your surroundings. Regularly clean your rugs and carpets as well.

Take Medications for Your Allergies

For minor allergy attacks, your doctor may prescribe some antihistamine for you. However, if your attacks are severe, you may have to take stronger medications and might even go through immunotherapy.

Maintain Proper Hygiene

Most of all, always be hygienic, not just with your surroundings but with your body as well. After playing with your cat, make sure that you wash your hands, face, and arms. Better yet, take off your clothes and have a quick shower to remove any trace of dander and saliva from your skin. Avoid entering your room right away after playing with your pet, as you will only scatter the dander all over the place.

With these tips, you will be able to enjoy your furry friends even if you are allergic to them.
