How the filter set works

When to replace your air purifier filters
Our air purifier arrives complete with filters installed and ready to operate.
Over time, the filters collect dust, allergens, mould spores, smoke, VOCs and other airborne contaminants. Eventually, they require replacement as part of normal ongoing care.
The lifespan of each filter depends on:
- how often the purifier is used
- dust levels within the home
- pets and pet hair
- smoke exposure
- water damage or mould conditions
- VOC and odour levels
- renovation or construction dust
- the number of hours the purifier operates
The following timeframes are a general guide for the Inova E8, E20 and DE20 air purifiers.
1. Pre-Filter
Usually the first filter to be replaced
General replacement guide: approximately every 6 months
The pre-filter captures larger particles before they reach the deeper filters, including:
- dust
- hair
- lint
- pet hair
- larger airborne debris
Regular pre-filter replacement helps maintain good airflow and supports the working life of the HEPA and activated carbon filters behind it.
You may need to replace it sooner if you notice:
- visible dust build-up
- reduced airflow
- heavy pet shedding
- renovation or construction dust
- a particularly dusty indoor environment

2. Medical-Grade HEPA Filter
Fine-particle filtration
General replacement guide: often around 12–24 months
The Medical-Grade HEPA filter assists in capturing fine airborne particles, including:
- fine household dust
- dust mite allergens
- pollen
- mould spores
- other microscopic airborne particles
It may be time to replace the HEPA filter if:
- airflow has noticeably reduced
- the purifier has operated continuously for an extended period
- the home has experienced a heavy or ongoing dust load
- the filter appears heavily loaded when inspected

3. Activated Carbon Filter
Odour, gas and VOC support
General replacement guide: often around 12–24 months
The activated carbon filter helps reduce:
- household odours
- smoke
- cooking smells
- VOCs
- gases
- chemical-related airborne contaminants
Unlike a particle filter, carbon may become less effective even when it does not appear visibly dirty.
It may be time to replace the carbon filter if:
- odours linger longer than they once did
- smoke or chemical exposure has occurred
- VOC levels or chemical use within the home have increased
- the air no longer feels as fresh while the purifier is operating

Building Biologist’s Note
Every home places a different load on its air purifier.
Filters may require earlier inspection or replacement following:
- water damage
- mould growth or remediation
- bushfire smoke
- renovation work
- heavy dust events
- strong chemical or VOC exposure
- prolonged use in a highly contaminated space
Replacing filters earlier in these circumstances is not necessarily a sign that anything is wrong with the purifier. It may simply reflect the work the filters have been doing within the environment.
