4 Tips to Improve Air Quality in Your Home

1. Keep your floors clean.

Chemicals and contaminants in the air can accumulate within household dust for many years. By using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter it is possible to reduce concentrations of lead, as well as eradicate allergens like pollen, pet dander, and dust mites.

Mopping picks up the dust that vacuuming leaves behind. Avoid the soaps and cleaners and use plain water to capture lingering dust and allergens.

A door mat reduces the amount of dirt, pesticides and pollutants from coming into your home.

2. Keep a healthy level of humidity.

Mould and dust mites thrive in moisture. Use a dehumidifier to keep humidity around 30%-50%, which effectively controls the allergens.

3. Make your home a no-smoking zone.

Cigarette smoke contains greater than 4, 000 chemical substances. Second-hand smoke will increase a child’s chance of developing ear and respiratory infections, asthma, cancer, or even Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

4. Avoid synthetic fragrances.

You may associate that lemony scent with a clean kitchen, but synthetic fragrances in laundry products and air fresheners emit a multitude of different chemicals in to the air. By law, the names do not have to be listed on the product labels. Conventional laundry powders and liquids, air fresheners, etc. may all emit these kinds of toxic gasses.

Most fragrances are derived from petroleum products, and generally haven’t been tested for adverse health effects in humans when they are inhaled.

Use fragrance-free or naturally-scented laundry and cleaning products. Check out our range of Abode non-toxic laundry products by clicking here.
