What’s the Difference Between Dust Mite Covers

What’s the difference between dust mite covers or allergy prevention covers, Aller Protect and Mite Guard, or are they the same in providing protection from dust mites and allergies?

While they do have many similarities, providing the same level of allergy protection, consumers choose to combine AllerProtect Mite Guard covers from our range, AllerProtect and Mite Guard are two distinct materials and prices.

AllerProtect’s main difference is 100% cotton, natural and 5 year warranty, while Mite Guard is polypropylene, man-made material and 2 year warranty.

The AllerProtect cotton material is naturally cooler, makes it more suitable for warm bodied sleepers, eczema sufferers and temperate to warmer climate locations. But, depending on the severity of allergen sensitivity, the AllerProtect pore size is smaller down to 4.5 microns that stop dust mites slightly more efficiently.

The Mite Guard pore size at 6.2 microns is an inexpensive alternative and suitable for cooler climates, protecting from dust mites and their faeces just as well.

In fact, dust mite allergens (Der f 1 and Der p 1) were blocked below detectable limits by fabrics of less than 10 micron in pore size according to Plats-Mills et al. (1998). However, fabrics with an average pore size of 6 microns or less blocked cat allergen (Fel d 1)  which both brands embrace.

These brands are designed with a unique totally encased ‘envelope’ with a specialised sewing techniques and zipper that prevent dust mites coming through.

To make a long story short, it depends on what you are using the covers for.  Sometimes a pillow cover works fine for everything you want, you spend one third of your life resting with your favourite pillow, right!
